Frequently asked questions

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on reflux surgery! Here we answer the most common questions our patients often ask about our surgical solutions. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team.

In which cases may surgical treatment be necessary?

In all cases where reflux disease causes daily problems for the patient. There is a noticeable change in the patient’s quality of life, regular medication is required or there are recurrent reflux symptoms.

What types of reflux surgery are available and which one would be best for me?

We perform three types of reflux surgery, which you can find details of on our TERAPIES | Reflux Clinic | reflux.iqbmedical.com. Our specialists will always recommend the most suitable solution for the patient, which will be determined after a preoperative examination.

How effective is surgery in treating reflux symptoms in the long term?

As a result of the surgery, statistics show an 80-100% reduction in reflux events and almost all of our patients can stop taking their regular reflux medication. For a full recovery, it is necessary to follow the aftercare recommendations.

How can surgery affect lifestyle and diet?

The patient can return to their pre-reflux lifestyle and eat without restrictions. For certain reflux operations, it is recommended to eat at least five meals a day. Our specialists will always discuss the details of the type of surgery with the patient.

What tests should I have before the operation?

The operation requires gastroscopy (endoscopic examination of the upper alimentary canal), oesophageal manometry (examination of oesophageal muscle function) and PH impedance (examination of the frequency of acid reflux) within 6 months. You can also have these preoperative tests done in our clinic. Our tests are only associated with minor discomfort.

What can you expect after the operation?

After our surgeries, in most cases, solid food can be consumed within a few hours of surgery and no major dietary restrictions are necessary. Minor discomfort after laparoscopic surgery should disappear within a few days.

Each patient will be advised of their individual post-operative requirements by their surgeon prior to surgery.

Where is the surgery done?

Surgery is performed in the most modern surgical centre in Central Europe, the Duna Medical Center in Budapest.

What technique is used to perform the operations?

In all cases, our specialists use a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique under general anaesthesia. Surgeries last between 30-60 minutes. This surgical technique reduces the stress on the body, speeds recovery and reduces the risk of surgical complications.

How much time do you need to spend in hospital?

In most cases, the patient can leave on the day of surgery. Many patients choose to spend the night after their operation in our hospital, so the cost of one night in hospital is included in the price of the operation.

How long does it take to recover from reflux surgery?

Full recovery takes 3-6 months, but the patient can start working or travelling the next day without physical strain.
